In decades past, the kingdom was at war. During this period of unrest, the king built many fortresses in the hills and forest country at strategic points. One of these places is named Fort Nightshade, where the Governess Henbane, a human Warlock, was sent to live and train mages for the military. She was also tasked with magical experimentation, specializing in the field of demonology. It is said that her research ultimately ended the war, but none live to speak of the horrors.

The Governess Henbane had a daughter, though none can agree on how or who with. She is Datura Henbane, and she has not been seen since the old Governess died, some years after the war. Few remain today who would even remember what she looked like, though rumors abound; she was cursed, she continued her mother's work, she died and haunts Nightshade Castle, so on and so forth. People in the village of Broken Fort, the town that grew around the abandoned fortress, tell stories of the Nightshade Specter to prevent children from playing within the ruins.
